The movements
Rolex movements, and what they mean for a clone
A super clone is won or lost on its movement. Here are the calibers that matter — what each one powers, and why it decides clone quality.
Cal.4130 / 4131
72 hours reserveCosmograph Daytona
Rolex's in-house chronograph, with the column-wheel architecture and the signature 3-6-9 sub-dial layout. The cloned 4130 is the benchmark super clone movement — its correct sub-dial positions are the single fastest way to tell a true Daytona clone from a 7750-based fake.
Cal.3235
~70 hours reserveDatejust, Submariner Date, Sea-Dweller, Yacht-Master
The workhorse date movement of the modern range. A cloned 3235 gives the correct date mechanism and power reserve; it is what sits inside the best Datejust, Submariner and Sea-Dweller clones.
Cal.3230
~70 hours reserveSubmariner No-Date, Oyster Perpetual, Explorer, Air-King
The time-only sibling of the 3235, for references without a date. Clean execution matters because there is no date or complication to distract from the dial.
Cal.3285
~70 hours reserveGMT-Master II
The travel movement, with a true independent-hour GMT function — the local hour hand jumps in one-hour steps without stopping the watch. A quality clone reproduces this; a weak one moves the GMT and hour hands together.
Cal.3255
~70 hours reserveDay-Date 'President'
The day-and-date movement of the President. The clone challenge is less the movement than the precious-metal case around it, but the day wheel must change cleanly at midnight.
Cal.9001
~72 hours reserveSky-Dweller
Rolex's most complex caliber — an annual calendar with a dual-time display and the Ring Command bezel. The hardest movement in the range to clone, which is why Sky-Dweller clones vary so much in quality.
Cal.7135
~66 hours reserveLand-Dweller (2025)
The newest caliber, with Rolex's Dynapulse high-frequency escapement. As the freshest release, clones approximate it with an established automatic base while factories refine their versions.
Cal.3135
~48 hours reserveLegacy Submariner, Datejust, Sea-Dweller
The legendary previous-generation workhorse, in production for decades. The most cloned legacy movement of all — robust, well-understood, and still found in clones of older references.
